SkyRidge Puppies

Feeding Schedule

Toy breed puppies have fast metabolisms and tiny stomachs, which makes consistency and proper nourishment extremely important during development. At SkyRidge Puppies, we typically recommend free feeding until approximately 9 months of age to help support steady growth and stable energy levels.

Our Feeding Recommendation

We recommend allowing access to kibble throughout the day until around 9 months old, especially for smaller toy breeds. Puppies may naturally eat smaller amounts more frequently rather than larger scheduled meals.

8–12 Weeks Old

Free feeding recommended

MorningFresh food & water available
MiddayMonitor appetite & hydration
EveningRefresh food if needed

Puppies should never go long periods without food at this age. Food may be lightly softened with warm water if needed during adjustment periods.

3–6 Months Old

Continue free feeding

MorningRefresh kibble & water
AfternoonMonitor eating habits
EveningProvide fresh food if needed

Toy breed puppies often regulate themselves well when given consistent access to food. Monitor body condition, stool quality, and appetite regularly.

6–9 Months Old

Transition period

MorningRefresh food & water
Throughout DayContinue monitored access
EveningObserve appetite & intake

Around this age, some puppies naturally begin developing more structured eating habits on their own.

9–12 Months Old

Begin transitioning to scheduled meals

8:00 AMBreakfast
6:00 PMDinner

Once puppies mature, many transition well to two structured meals daily, though some smaller companions may still prefer lighter grazing patterns.

SkyRidge Tip

Toy breed puppies can occasionally experience drops in blood sugar if they skip meals or go too long without eating. Maintaining consistent nourishment during the first year is extremely important for healthy development.
