Protecting Little Paws in the Heat

Summer days are beautiful, but warm weather can be especially hard on puppies and small breeds. One of the biggest things to watch for is hot asphalt, sidewalks, and pavement.

Asphalt can become much hotter than the outside temperature and may burn your puppy’s paw pads within minutes. If the ground feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws.

The 7-Second Paw Test

Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If you cannot comfortably keep it there, your puppy should not walk on it.

Safer Summer Tips

• Walk early in the morning or later in the evening.
• Choose grass, shaded paths, or indoor play when possible.
• Keep walks short during very warm days.
• Bring fresh water and avoid overexertion.
• Never leave your puppy in a parked car, even briefly.
